Welcome to Viñales : Pinar del Rio
The first time history mentions a region of the Cuban West – Guaniguanico – was as far back as 1510.
Those memoirs pointed out the hospitable and generous nature of the caciques, who received the shipwrecked expeditionaries during the Conquest of Central America.
Since then, and even when the presence of the Indians in these lands was extinguished, Pinar del Río shows, in the eyes of the visitor, solidarity and altruism.
Its population of (592 851) welcomes you to a region that always surprises and shows its best attractions from one end to the other.
The province is located in the westernmost part of Cuba.
The main geographical group is the Guaniguanico Mountain Range, and it has 11% of the river basins of the country.
With an average temperature of 25.3oC and red and sandy soils.
As part of the mountain range, the Viñales Valley was declared a National Park in 1999 and, in December of the same year, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Cultural Landscape.
It also has the status of National Monument, and above all the recognition of thousands of admirers who visit it every year.
The traveller finds in this place, surprising landscapes that he discovers through hiking, horseback riding, excursions to cave systems such as the Great Cavern of Santo Tomás or the Caves of Indio and José Miguel.
More recently, canopy is practiced, a route over the top of the high pines that populate our valleys.
Pinar del Río is also a land of peasants, humble people deeply rooted in their roots, who keep alive centuries of tradition expressed in the popular “guateques”, a typical celebration of our fields enlivened by the “tonadas”, “décimas guajiras” and controversies.
They are always made around a Creole meal: grilled pork, conger eel, plantain chips, yucca with mojo…
and also with drinks like the well-known Guayabita del Pinar, which is only produced here, in a traditional way.
Inspired by the traditions of our guajiros, the Tobacco Route is developed, a journey that begins in the hands of the vegan until the elaboration of the exquisite cigars by the experts.
From the dedication of these men and women a genuine product of our region is born, which places us in the Mecca of the best tobacco in the world.
The Guanahacabibes Peninsula is located in the westernmost part of the province, in the municipality of Sandino.
It has an area of 1,060 km2 and its special characteristics, of great environmental importance, make it a Biosphere Reserve.
At present, it is the safest place in Cuba for the reproduction of three types of sea turtles – green, loggerhead and hawksbill – that choose the coasts of the peninsula to nest.
Every year, park rangers, ecologists and tourists participate in this unique experience whose main objective is precisely to protect these endangered species.
This zone has one of the beaches with better marine bottoms of all Cuba, Maria la Gorda, where the International Diving Center is located every
The Imasub underwater photography event is one of its main activities this year.
However, you cannot leave the province without reaching the north, where there are two natural paradises: Cayo Jutías and Cayo Levisa.
Both places treasure mangrove areas, exuberant coral reefs, extensive stretches of fine sand and warm green-blue waters for the enjoyment of all who visit them.
The city attractions are also part of the thematic agenda for those who want to get to know the province fully.
The city of Pinar del Río, whose charm can be discovered walking its streets, has a peculiar architecture, represented in emblematic buildings such as the Milanese Theatre, the Natural History Museum (Guash Palace), the Provincial History Museum, the Married Couples’ Palace, the Vueltabajo Hotel, among others that are part of its tangible heritage.
Pinar del Río dawns, and it is the right place for those who admire the beauties and whims of nature, for those who love arts, for those who prefer to rest with the sound of the sea and for those who wish to interact with the humble and hospitable man, sharing with him an exquisite cigar and some glasses of Guayabita del Pinar
